This mantel is solid old growth Pine. It is not hollow or partical board junk. Please keep in mind this piece is made from reclaimed wood, each piece is well over 100 years old. Nothing is new! We try to remove all the splinters and loose wood before sanding. Sometimes we cut through nails and leave them. There are cracks, knots, worm holes, highs and lows in the wood. These pieces are for the most part the way we found them when we took the barn down. They are a piece of history preserved.
